Becoming an Athlete Mentor

31st March 2012
The month of March has seen me become a student again. At the beginning of March I completed my training in becoming an athlete mentor with the Youth Sport Trust. I will hopefully visiting many schools across the country giving inspirational and motivational speeches to help students and pupils be motivated enough to give everything to have to achieve their dreams in life. Hopefully sharing my sporting experiences will go somewhere to doing that. So I attended two training days at Loughborough University with the Youth Sport Trust where I met and listened to other athletes share their stories which was brilliant because there were so many different stories.
March was also the month I launched my exciting new personal website Lee Fawcett. Here people can find out all about me and also some of the events that I am going to attend. It is also great to find out about wheelchair basketball and all about  my team Newcastle Eagles Wheelchair Basketball Team. In the future I plan to add some training plans and individual sessions for wheelchair basketball coaches.

On the 20th-21st March I attended the Great Britain Wheelchair Basketball Mens squad 2 day training camp at the Manchester Velodrome Indoor Cycling Centre. I was invited to camp to continue my coaching training. It is so good to work with International Class Wheelchair Basketball players and the Head Coach Murray Treseder encourages me to get stuck in at the deep end with the team. It is still a struggle to accept that I am now attempting to coach my friends and old team mates but this is getting better after each camp. To be honest I am mainly observing at the moment with small input but my desire to jump in my basketball chair and join in training still burns inside. The camp was set up to work on extra fundamental training with the guys. We worked on a lot of shooting and chair work as the guys have been playing a lot of games lately.

On the weekend of the 24th and 25th of March I was coaching again with my Newcastle Eagles Team and on the 24th of March I was asked to help out with coaching our D2 teams match against League Leaders Vikings. The team had already played Vikings away from home this season and were on the end of a disappointing 35 point loss. On the game day we decided to keep it quite simple by setting up a solid zone defence. We knew the team would have to perform at a high level to stay in the game. The D2 were performing brilliantly and at half time we were leading the match, you could tell this was not on the script for the Vikings team as they looked very frustrated. With great defence and great finishing we beat the Vikings team 60-53.

On the 25th the D1 Team finished its season with a 42-36 win over Manchester Mavericks. The game was very scrappy and Eagles didn't perform anywhere near they did in their last games against Steelers and Knights, however I was very pleased to win the game with not playing particularly well and this certainly last year would have been a game we would of lost, if we had not performed. We will hopefully finish 3rd in the table which is a massive turn around from finishing second bottom last season. We won 8 games and lost 4 so a pretty reasonable season.

I am also proud to have supported a great event ran by TFM radio called Cash for Kids day. In partnership with Whizz Kidz, TFM aimed to raise £20000 to help support the charity Whizz Kidz in their aims to provide new wheelchairs to children who basically need a wheelchair so much to help with their day to day life. Please keep checking my blogger page and my website for new blogs every month.
